I found a moment, once again to blog. Here I am… a little over a week into my program. I am working a local tech school called INA (ee-nah). My students range from 18-22 and are very advanced in conversational english. I could not have asked for a better placement. I am, however struggling with this spanish keyboard… so excuse my lack of punctuation.

So far my days have been been a combination of volunteer work in the morning, lunch and then some sort of activity. The activities include: Spánish classes, Fieldtrips & lectures. Last week our fieldtrip was a hike to the Arenal Volcano, which was simply gorgeous. We also had a lecture where we learned all about the Costa Rican health care system. I will post more detailed information about this later (when I am not being charged by the minute to use internet).

Okay this is a long time coming. I have been planning this trip for about a year now. Where am I? Well let´s just say that the keyboard I´m typing on has ¿ as a key… whoa! I´m in Costa Rica. It´s the first day of my volunteer abroad trip. We had a city tour and orientation this morning. A delicious breakfast with the traditional costa rican ¨gallo pinto¨, which is rice and beans. Kinda weird for breakfast, but I could get used to that. Orientation was a little overwhelming, lots to learn and a whole new culture to adapt to. It was raining more then cats and dogs, perhaps it was oxen and chickens. So we could barely hear our program director. Lunch was a special treat, arroz y polo, which is chicken and rice, fresh fruit, salsa, and tortillas. The other voluteers are pretty cool. Some have been here a while, while others started with me yesterday. We have spanish class twice a week, starting today. So hopefully I make it past the basic basic level. Alright I better get going, I will check in with everyone as I find time!

Okay, maybe not quite Times Square…. but if there were a Times Square in Boise, this would be it. I’m talking about the Metro Express Car Wash on the corner of Front & 13th in Boise. For the entire month of January, they are featuring my artwork on their beautiful sign from 9pm – 7am. So when you’re half passed out in a cab at 2am, make sure you take a look out your window on your way to the connector. You’re not going to want to miss this!

I took the liberty this evening to shoot some photographs of the sign.

I’m getting very excited as I watch the days count down to my departure to San Carlos, Costa Rica. In an effort to work on my spanish and push my american brain into the culture of the Ticos, I am going to dedicate a few blogs to Costa Rica. To kick this off, let’s discuss some art. Now I could talk about art all day so we’ll focus this down to one artist in particular, Francisco Amighetti.

Last year I found myself surrounded by my favorite people, in my living room, counting down from 10 to 1, and drinking far too much champagne. The guests affectionately labeled my party “High School Prom”. Perhaps it was the decor or maybe the cheesy music I played with an air of sarcasm. Regardless, It was the perfect way to bring in the new year. Continue reading I am going to do all the shit that scares the shit out of me!

I had so much fun yesterday at Art in the Bar. This event was the brain child of Wayne Crans and Ellen DeAngelis of Dead Bird Gallery. They brought together some amazing local Boise artists and let us take over the Knitting Factory for 10 hours. The eclectic mix of artists plus a full bar (hosted in a concert venue) really set the scene for this unique spin on an art fair.

I have a couple bushes in my yard that I picked out not just because they are a gorgeous blue and have this amazingly soft fern like texture”but also because of their name, Artemisia.
